Emirates overview
Emirates is a network airline based in Dubai, United Arab Emirates. The airline uses IATA code EK, ICAO code UAE and the callsign EMIRATES. IATA lists the legal name as Emirates.
Most Emirates flights are built around Dubai International Airport, with long-haul and regional connections across Asia, Europe, Africa, the Americas, the Middle East and the Pacific. A single itinerary can include Emirates-operated flights, flydubai, Qantas or other interline and codeshare partners, so passengers should check the operating carrier before relying on baggage, check-in or special-service rules.
Emirates routes
Emirates routes connect Dubai with destinations across Africa, Asia and the Pacific, Europe, the Americas and the Middle East. The network changes by season, aircraft, demand and traffic rights, so the examples below are route examples rather than a guarantee for every travel date.
- European examples may include Dubai to London, Manchester, Paris, Amsterdam, Frankfurt, Munich, Zurich, Vienna, Milan, Rome, Madrid, Barcelona, Prague, Warsaw, Athens, Stockholm and Dublin.
- Asia-Pacific examples may include Dubai to Mumbai, Delhi, Bengaluru, Bangkok, Singapore, Kuala Lumpur, Manila, Jakarta, Seoul, Tokyo, Osaka, Sydney, Melbourne, Perth, Auckland and Christchurch.
- Africa, Middle East and Americas examples may include Dubai to Cairo, Casablanca, Nairobi, Johannesburg, Cape Town, Mauritius, Riyadh, Jeddah, Kuwait, Muscat, New York, Boston, Chicago, Dallas, Los Angeles, San Francisco, Seattle, Toronto, Montreal, Rio de Janeiro and Sao Paulo.
- For a specific date, check the current schedule, operating carrier and baggage concept, then search Emirates flights before booking.
Emirates baggage
Emirates baggage depends on travel class, fare type and route. Economy Class normally includes 1 carry-on bag up to 7 kg and 55x38x22 cm. Premium Economy includes 1 carry-on bag up to 10 kg and the same dimensions. Business and First Class normally include 2 carry-on items: a briefcase plus either a handbag or garment bag, each up to 7 kg; the handbag limit is 55x38x22 cm, the briefcase limit is 45x35x20 cm and a garment bag can be up to 20 cm thick when folded.
Checked baggage uses either weight concept or piece concept. Weight concept applies to most routes: Economy Special, Saver, Flex and Flex Plus show 20 kg, 25 kg, 30 kg and 35 kg respectively; Premium Economy shows 35 kg, Business Class 40 kg and First Class 50 kg. Economy Saver has 30 kg on some Australia/New Zealand journeys. Each checked bag must not exceed 32 kg, and the total dimensions of an individual bag on weight-concept routes should not exceed 300 cm.
Piece concept applies to flights to and from the Americas and Africa. On most Americas/Africa piece-concept routes, Economy Special shows 1 piece up to 23 kg, Economy Saver/Flex/Flex Plus show 2 pieces up to 23 kg each, Premium Economy shows 2 pieces up to 23 kg each, and Business or First show 2 pieces up to 32 kg each. For flights within the Americas and between the United States and Europe, Economy Special and Saver show 1 piece up to 23 kg, while Flex and Flex Plus show 2 pieces. Each piece should not exceed 150 cm total dimensions before oversize fees apply.
Emirates check-in
Emirates online check-in is available 48 hours before scheduled departure and closes 90 minutes before scheduled departure for passengers with e-tickets. Online check-in is not available when the first flight in the itinerary is not operated by Emirates, including non-Emirates codeshare flights.
At most airports, airport check-in opens 3 hours before departure, and at some airports it can open up to 4 hours before departure. Emirates asks passengers to pass passport control and security 90 minutes before the flight, reach the gate no later than 60 minutes before departure in Economy or Premium Economy, and no later than 45 minutes before departure in Business or First. In Dubai, bag drop can be available 24 hours before departure, or 12 hours before departure for flights to the United States.
Emirates fares and services
Emirates fare types include Special, Saver, Flex and Flex Plus in Economy Class and Business Class. Premium Economy is generally sold with Flex Plus, while First Class is offered as Flex or Flex Plus where available. Exact fare availability depends on market, route, cabin and sales channel.
Special and Saver are more restrictive fares and usually provide fewer flexibility benefits. Flex and Flex Plus cost more but can include broader change or cancellation flexibility, more Skywards and Tier Miles, and better seat-selection conditions. In Economy, Regular seat selection can be paid on Special and Saver, complimentary on Flex and Flex Plus, while Preferred, Twin and Extra Legroom seats may still have charges depending on fare and seat type.
Business Special is more restrictive and may allow seat selection only when check-in opens, while Business Saver, Flex and Flex Plus include complimentary seat selection. Premium Economy and First Class seat selection is published as complimentary. Change, refund, no-show, upgrade and lounge conditions can vary by fare basis, market and ticketing channel, so passengers should read the fare conditions shown during booking.
Emirates services
Emirates services can include seat selection, extra baggage, sports equipment handling, special meals, ice inflight entertainment, onboard Wi-Fi, lounge access for eligible passengers, paid lounge access where offered, Chauffeur-drive on eligible premium fares, upgrades, Dubai Connect, marhaba meet-and-greet, special assistance, children services, pet transport and Emirates Skywards benefits.
Onboard services depend on aircraft, route and cabin. Emirates lists the ice entertainment system with up to 6,500 channels on many aircraft, onboard Wi-Fi across the fleet subject to technical and route limitations, and cabin features that vary across A380, B777 and A350 aircraft. Wi-Fi chat packages are published from USD 2.99-5.99 and full-flight internet from USD 9.99-19.99, while Emirates Skywards members can receive complimentary chat or internet benefits depending on cabin and tier.
Emirates pets
Emirates does not generally permit pets in the cabin, except falcons between Dubai and selected destinations in Pakistan and certain service dogs on regulated routes. Other pets must travel as checked baggage in the hold or as cargo, depending on route, country rules, container size, animal type and journey time.
Emirates asks passengers to give at least one week's notice for pet travel so documents and arrangements can be checked. Animals must be older than four months. Pets carried as excess baggage travel in a special area of the aircraft hold; if the carrier's total dimensions exceed 300 cm, the animal must travel as cargo. Published excess-baggage animal charges start from USD 500/CAD 700 for animal plus cage up to 23 kg and 150 cm total dimensions.
